Kid Again- Jon Bellion
If I could pinpoint one artist that single handedly changed the scope of my music discography I would have to say that person would be Jon Bellion. I remember exactly where I was when I heard “He is the same” and my first thought was “How come I haven't heard this yet?” His sound was so captivating and as a young man in High School, he knew exactly what he was doing when it came to his lyrics. After his 6 year hiatus he is finally back in the saddle and let me tell you, he did not disappoint.
For any artist, taking a break will come with some challenges. You have pressure from fans to release new work but also pressure on yourself to make sure that work lives up to your own standard. For Jon he had a little bit of a bigger challenge. His last project created this whole new genre that shaped the sound for some years.
Many fans have had speculations as to why he has not released any new music. Some say he was upset with the ticket industry and the exploitation of fans, others say there is no reason, he is not a part of any label and had nothing to owe anybody so he can just take the time to release music whenever he pleases. Regardless of the reason it is great to know that one of the most creative people in the space of music is still releasing art that is true to himself.
When you listen to the song you get that sense of childlike freedom that was a staple to his music in the past. If there is any hidden meaning I think that for Jon, he realized that he wanted a song to have that feeling of his past ones, and he was going to take all the time he needed to make that happen, regardless of outside opinion.
I don't think that he owes us anything at this point in his career and we should be content with whatever more we get out of him as an artist. If he is truly back to making music full time then I can fully see him giving up an album or short EP by the end of the year. One thing I've noticed about his creative process is there is no waiting. He makes it how he wants and when he deems it ready, he releases it, no input from a label or outside executives trying to change things for clicks, just truly authentic music from a truly authentic musician.
I hope that Bellion continues on this path of giving us nostalgic music but if not I think we should all be able to live with that. Jon has a foot in almost every door in the music industry so just because you might not hear his voice, does not mean that he didn't have a possible hand in making some of the songs that you know and love today.
Thank you Jon, your art is truly appreciated.
