Albums don’t feel the same

Over the past few weeks we have had a lot of really good music from many high profile artists. We have “Chromakopia" by Tyler the Creator, “Still Praying" by Westside Gunn and that is just a few to name.

At work today I decided to put a different album on, which I do most days, and I put on “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” by Wu-Tang Clan. Not only is this considered one of the best albums of all time, but it single handedly changed the course of Hip-Hop history and the different styles that we have throughout the genre itself. As I was listening I couldn't get the thought out of my head on how this is not a possible thing in today's day and age with music. There are very few albums in the last decade where you can truly sit and listen to the whole entire thing, and this is not just about Hip-Hop.

I listened to albums like “Graceland" by Paul Simon, “Ok Computer” by Radiohead, and “Untrue" by Burial (If you know you know) and they are all very different genres that still find this way to captivate my attention enough to really listen to the whole thing. I don't know if it’s the fact that I know historically that these are great albums or is it because my attention span is fully shot at this point.

I feel like these new albums just have certain songs or a certain group of songs that I just skip over instantly. That is not to say the song is bad but maybe I am not personally giving the song enough of a listen and I write it off before I really listen. Maybe there is more to blame than myself. Social media? Attention spans? Is music just actually not as good? I really don’t have an answer.

This article is not meant to be an opinion piece but more of a general question. Why don’t albums feel the way they used to?
